Fincher's shooting secret

Se7en is a relentlessly dark film, and director David Fincher took meticulous steps to maintain its grim atmosphere from start to finish.

He used a technique called bleach bypass - also known as skip bleach or silver retention - which desaturates the film while preserving its silver tones, creating a darker, more ominous look.

To further enhance the film’s bleak aesthetic, Fincher also relied heavily on rain and fog machines to depict the dreary, oppressive streets of New York City.
