As well as its director, Se7en nearly had different leads in the roles of detectives David Mills and William Somerset.

Writer Andrew Kevin initially envisioned William Hurt as Detective Somerset, though the role never came to fruition for the actor.

Other names reportedly considered included Al Pacino, Harrison Ford and Gene Hackman, but none received a formal offer, ultimately paving the way for Morgan Freeman to take on the part.

For Detective David Mills, Denzel Washington was offered the role but declined due to the film’s dark themes.

However, he later admitted regretting his decision after seeing the final product.

He reflected: “I thought the script was too demonic, then I saw the movie, and I was like, ‘Oh, I blew it.’ But, you know, it worked out alright.”
