While filming his survival documentary series in Papua New Guinea in late 2019, the actor contracted a deadly bacterial infection that required an emergency medical evacuation flight to Australia. After fans feared the worst, the High School Musical star took to social media to confirm he had pulled through the life-threatening scare.

He thanked everyone for reaching out, stating: "I did get sick in Papua New Guinea but I bounced back quick and finished an amazing 3 weeks there."
