Joe Manganiello suffered 'multiple near-death experiences'
Joe Manganiello has opened up about his health woes in his new memoir, Bloodlines.
Joe Manganiello has survived "multiple near-death experiences" in the last decade.
The 49-year-old actor has opened up about his health woes in his new memoir, Bloodlines, which details his struggles and how they led him "beyond medicine and into a remarkable, globe-spanning quest that revealed answers about his ancestry, inherited trauma and the deeper histories we carry".
He told People: "It was the most brutally difficult time of my life, one I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy, but also my greatest adventure.
"I hope that what I went through on this journey can give readers hope that answers and healing may lie for them on the other side of whatever they are fighting through. The process of writing this book gave me the gift of perspective that helped me to see that my suffering was a cocoon from which I would emerge forever changed."
The Magic Mike actor said his ordeal began with "a cascade of autoimmune-related illnesses" that attacked his skin, thyroid, eyes, lungs and digestive system, plunging him into a seven-year battle marked by chronic pain and a life-saving organ amputation.
As traditional medicine failed to provide answers, Joe turned to shamans, pagan rituals, ancient myths, long-lost family records and the rebirth of his own spirituality, according to the book's synopsis.
Meanwhile, Joe previously opened up about his relationship with Ron Mathews, the trainer and nutritionist who has worked with him for over a decade.
The actor feels he's really benefited from working with Ron, who previously worked with NASA.
Joe told Men's Journal: "He’ll take 10 vials of your blood, then three weeks later, you get 26 pages of results. He tells you exactly what you should be eating — what I’m designed to eat."
Joe also explained that he was investing in himself before he started making huge money.
He said: "My first year on True Blood, I lived off my savings.
"I was paid next to nothing for that first season, and I put all that money into my trainer and a publicist. I didn’t have the money to be spending on Hugh Jackman’s trainer, right? But I just f****** made it happen."
