Kelly McGillis, who played Charlie in the original Top Gun, did return not for the sequel.

Instead, Jennifer Connelly joined as Maverick’s love interest Penny - a new character based on a brief mention in the first film.

Even so, McGillis didn’t mind her omission from Top Gun: Maverick.

She said: “They did not ask me to come back, and I’m fine with that.”
