Love and stardom

Cher and Sonny grew close and eventually fell in love.

In 1964, the pair held an unofficial wedding ceremony in a hotel room in Tijuana, Mexico, before launching their musical act under the name Caesar and Cleo.

Although their early releases met with little success, things changed in 1965 when the duo rebranded as Sonny and Cher.

Their breakthrough came after bringing ‘I Got You Babe’ to the UK.

As Cher later explained: “[They] had told us … that Americans just didn’t get us and that if we were going to make it big, we were going to have to go to England.”
