Buddy Ebsen was originally cast as the Tinman and his costume was covered in aluminium powder as a finishing effect, however, he suffered a severe reaction to it.

He was hospitalized and endured lung problems for the rest of his life, blaming his health issues on "that damn movie!"

Jack Haley replaced him and the powder was quietly changed to a paste.
