Box office dud
While ‘The Wizard of Oz’ is know considered a true cinematic classic, the film was not received well when it hit theatres in 1939.
On a budget of $2.7 million, the movie was only able to rake in about $3 million at the box office in its first outing as it had to content with the end of the Great Depression and compete with ‘Gone With the Wind’, though eventually turned a profit once it was rereleased to cinemas in 1949 and made $35.3 million globally.
While it wasn’t initially a financial hit, ‘The Wizard of Oz’ fared much better at the Academy Awards and was nominated for five Oscars - ultimately taking home two for Best Original Song for 'Over the Rainbow' and Best Original Score.
