Creating icons
Emily Blunt’s sharp-tongued assistant Emily Charlton is well-known for throwing out plenty of insults and smarmy one-liners, though the actress actually borrowed one of her most iconic lines from a mother she spotted at a local store.
She recounted: “I guess I steal from people I meet. Like, I saw a mother speaking to her child in a supermarket when we were shooting that film. And it’s a line that gets quoted back to me now. She yelled at her kid and she kind of opened and closed her hand and she goes, ‘Yeah, I’m hearing this, and I want to hear this.’ I went and put it in a movie, when Anne Hathaway is kind of talking to me, and I just told her that [to shut her up].”
As for the final and most iconic line in the movie - Miranda’s “Oh don't be ridiculous, Andrea. Everybody wants this. Everybody wants to be us” - that too was improvised by Meryl Streep.
The line initially read, ‘everybody wants to be me’, though the actress opted to slightly alter it during a table read, and the rest is history.
