Banned from cinemas
As well as its poor box office performance in the US, the movie was also outright banned in New Zealand and Sweden.
The scene where Jim Goose is burned alive in his car was unfortunately a little too similar to a real incident that occurred in New Zealand just before the film hit theatres.
However, the ban on the film in New Zealand would later be lifted in 1983 after its sequel, ‘Mad Max 2: Road Warrior’, proved to be a massive hit.
As for Sweden, the country’s censors were not happy with the amount of violence the picture contained, and deemed it too graphic for audiences.
