Hugh Keays-Byrne, a legend of the franchise

Hugh Keays-Byrne played the villainous Toecutter in ‘Mad Max’ - the leader of the Acolytes Motorcycle Gang - but that’s not the only character the actor has portrayed in the franchise.

Hugh gladly returned to the series as Immortal Joe in 2015’s ‘Mad Max: Fury Road’.

After his passing in 2020, George Miller paid tribute to the actor, labelling him a “warm and sweet person”.

He said: “At first I found him formidable to the point of being scary because he was so into the role. The truth is he is a warm and sweet person and so embracing of everybody … I learned acting from him, probably more than anybody else that I worked with.”
