Edward Scissorhands was inspired by Burton’s teenage drawings
Tim Burton once drew a picture of Edward Scissorhands, a tall man with blades for hands, whilst he was still at high school. The character is supposed to represent Burton as a lonely teenager.
Burton informed screenwriter Caroline Thompson about the artwork and it influenced her writing, although she didn't see the actual drawing until production was underway.
She said: “He told me about the drawing that he had made many years earlier… He just told me about it. Later I saw the drawing, but I didn't see it until we were in production. I'm not even sure it was the original drawing, he might have created it and called it that.”
