Tom Cruise was considered for Depp’s role

At the insistence of 20th Century Fox, Tim Burton met with Tom Cruise to consider him for the titular lead role, but due to artistic differences, including the actor asking for a happier ending, they both agreed that he wasn’t the best choice to play Edward Scissorhands.

Burton remembered meeting with Cruise, saying: “He certainly wasn't my ideal, but I talked to him. He was interesting, but I think it worked out for the best. A lot of questions came up.”
