Berry Gordy was the Motown manager who once recalled being stopped in [his] tracks" when he first heard Diana's voice and quickly gave her her big break with The Supremes and made her the lead singer. The pair began dating in 1965 and by 1967, he had changed the name to Diana Ross and the Supremes, giving his lover star billing. Florence developed depression and quit the group and Diana later went solo, claiming that her bandmates "talked about behind my back when my back wasn’t even turned".
