'I just want to sing...'
Diana Ross was born in Detroit on 26 March, 1944 to Ernestine and Fred Ross as the second of six children. Her intended name was Diane, but a mistake on her birth certificate led to her becoming known as Diana.
She originally had aspirations to become a fashion designer and would often do hairdressing for neighbours but eventually found her true calling in the form of music and performing.
She said: "My career has never been about making money or being famous - I just wanted to sing, be a writer and a performer. Dreams really do come true."
