Sofia Vergara received a lot of positive attention for playing Gloria Delagado-Pritchett, but also faced some controversy, with some branding her portrayal of the character as needlessly stereotypical of a Latin American woman.

The actress defended the role, and emphasised that she based her performance off of Latina women she knew.

Sofia even helped write the character to ensure her portrayal was as accurate as possible.
