How Roseanne got Roseanne
TV producers Marcy Carsey and Tom Werner were keen to develop a sitcom about a working mother, but didn’t know who to cast.
However, after watching Roseanne Barr’s “domestic goddess” comedy routine on ‘The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson’ in 1985, the two knew they had struck gold, and immediately offered the comedian her own show.
By its second season, ‘Roseanne’ proved to be one of the most successful sitcoms of its time, and was ranked number one in the Nielsen ratings.
