The Bushes hated it

The Bush family did not like the show one bit.

In 1990, then First Lady Barbara Bush labelled the show "the dumbest thing [she] had ever seen". Two years later, President George W. Bush bashed the show during a speech for his re-election campaign.

He said: "We are going to keep on trying to strengthen the American family, to make American families a lot more like the Waltons and a lot less like the Simpsons."

In the opening for the very next episode, Bart mocked the president and said: "Hey, we're just like the Waltons. We're praying for an end to the Depression, too."
