George Barris - who had previously designed Adam West’s Batmobile for ‘Batman’ - created a right-seat driving position on the car that was able to dip below the dashboard, which was invisible from the outside.

A stunt driver would then sit in the seat, which was low enough to avoid detection but just high enough to see where they were going, and drive alongside cast members, making it appear that KITT was a self-driving vehicle.
