Trump has become the dominant figure in the Republican Party but previously suggested he would be more inclined to represent the other side.

He told Playboy magazine in 1990: "If I ever ran for office, I’d do better as a Democrat than as a Republican—and that’s not because I’d be more liberal, because I’m conservative."
