By 1979, Meryl had starred in 'The Seduction of Joe Tynan' as well as 'Manhattan' but won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in 'Kramer vs. Kramer'.
In the 1979 drama Streep portrayed a wife who leaves her husband (Dustin Hoffman) and ignites a custody battle for their son.
In her acceptance speech, she said: "Holy mackerel! I'd like to thank Dustin Hoffman and [director] Robert Benton, to whom I owe this."
