Tom Cruise reveals secrets of his dramatic Digger movie transformation
The Hollywood star has revealed how prosthetics, makeup, false teeth and a new accent helped him transform into oil baron Digger Rockwell for his latest film.
Tom Cruise has revealed the secrets of his elaborate physical transformation that helped him disappear into the lead role of his new film Digger.
Saying the character’s makeup, body language and even false teeth were all essential to bringing the larger-than-life oil baron to the screen, the Hollywood veteran, 64, unveiled the dramatic makeover secrets for his role as promotion kicks off for Digger, directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu.
It comes as a newly released trailer shows Tom almost unrecognisable beneath a grey comb-over hairstyle, prosthetics, a pot belly and false teeth while adopting a distinctive southern accent to play oil magnate Digger Rockwell, described as “the most powerful man in the world”, who sets out to prevent an ecological catastrophe.
The film marks Tom’s latest collaboration with Warner Bros. and follows the continuing success of Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, which has kept the actor firmly in the spotlight while reinforcing his reputation for physically demanding performances and practical stunt work.
Speaking during a press event at Warner Bros. in Burbank, California, Tom explained his approach to building a character.
He was quoted by Page Six said: “My process is: I’m absorbing, I’m absorbing, I’m absorbing.”
Tom continued: “With the body, we’re communicating a story… I want people to be immersed in a story.”
Discussing the physical transformation for Digger, Tom said: “You really have to understand the tools – it’s not one-size-fits-all.
“You have to find the communication, the lenses, the colour of the makeup.”
The Digger trailer released on Monday (13.07.26) introduces audiences to Digger Rockwell, with Tom’s appearance prompting widespread surprise from fans who struggled to recognise the actor beneath the extensive makeup and prosthetics.
Tom said the finishing touch came when he added the character’s false teeth.
He added: “I put the teeth on, and it’s like, ‘Let’s f*****’ go,’” before demonstrating Digger’s accent during the event.
Tom also compared the role to several of his previous screen performances, including his memorable turn as foul-mouthed studio executive Les Grossman in Tropic Thunder, another performance that relied heavily on prosthetics and exaggerated physicality.
He said: “When we’re looking for characters, we’re looking for humor, drama, certain constructs – how do we communicate this?”
Tom continued: “Whether it’s Les Grossman or Interview With the Vampire, Collateral, or Risky Business, I’m always asking, ‘How do I communicate this?’
“The physicality, the make-up, that is stuff that you find as you are learning how to communicate.”
Speaking about working with Alejandro, Tom described the project as unlike anything he had previously attempted.
He said: “I have never had something that could challenge me in this way, and neither had (director Alejandro González Iñárritu) when we went in, ever.”
He added: “When you see this film, it’s totally original.”
Following the release of the film’s poster on Tom’s social media accounts, many fans questioned whether the image really showed the actor.
One commenter wrote: “That can’t be Tom Cruise.”
Another added: “Ain’t no way.”
The reaction echoes the surprise that greeted Tom’s transformation in Tropic Thunder, where his portrayal of Les Grossman became one of the comedy’s most talked-about performances despite only limited screen time.
With Digger, the actor has once again embraced extensive prosthetics and character makeup as he takes on a role that differs sharply from the action heroes that have defined much of his career.
Tom remains best known for the Mission: Impossible franchise, as well as films including Top Gun, Jerry Maguire, Rain Man and Risky Business.
