'I could barely breathe...' Sherrie Hewson reveals horror Christmas disaster that left her fearing death
Sherrie Hewson has shared her ultimate Christmas disaster, which saw her be hospitalised.
Sherrie Hewson has relived the time she could "barely breathe" and feared "dying of hypothermia" after she fell on ice and "broke some ribs" one Christmas Eve.
The actress' late mum, Joy Meakin, insisted that Sherrie, 75, covered her car windscreen with a blanket to prevent snow from landing on the glass and freezing over during that wintry night.
Once Sherrie opened the front door to follow her mum's request, the Benidorm star remembers slipping and then being "thrown into the air" before she crashed down on the property's ice-covered driveway.
Asked if Sherrie has had a Christmas Day disaster, the ex-Loose Women panellist recalled in the new issue of Best magazine: "OMG yes! One in particular, which involved my late mother, who was a very formidable lady.
"It happened one Christmas Eve when it was snowing heavily. It was dark, but mother insisted that I put a blanket on my windscreen and to 'do it now!'
"You didn't say no to mother, so I did as she ordered, leaving the front door open as I went.
"The next thing I knew, I slipped. I was thrown into the air and fell heavily onto a chunk of ice. I came to but could barely breathe or speak, and I couldn't move an inch."
Sherrie tried to shout for help as Joy approached the front door, but could not due to being in pain.
Joy shut the front door - oblivious that her daughter was lying on the cold driveway, injured - and it left Sherrie helpless and fearing for her life.
The Coronation Street alum shared: "I didn't know what to do. I saw my mother coming to the front door and shouting for me, but I couldn't reply.
"She slammed the door, muttering that I'd obviously decided to go out without her. I didn't know what to do. I thought I'd die of hypothermia."
On her stomach, Sherrie dragged herself up the driveway and hurled stones at the property's windows to get Joy's attention.
After Joy found her daughter on the driveway, Sherrie was rushed to hospital.
The star said: "I managed to haul myself up the driveway on my stomach, and I started throwing stones at the windows. Finally, she came out and found me.
"I managed to tell her to phone an ambulance, which took ages as she couldn't use my mobile phone.
"By the time it arrived, I was unconscious! I was taken to hospital, and it transpired I'd broken some ribs.
"It wasn't exactly the best Christmas!"
