The Swedish siren announced a "temporary" retirement from acting at the age of 36 following her appearance in the 1941 movie Two-Faced Woman – which turned out to be permanent.

The enigmatic Anna Christie star, who shunned interviews and film premieres, left Hollywood for New York – where she lived until her death aged 84 in 1990.
