Hulk announced in 1998 that he planned to run for the US presidency at the 2000 election, even promoting his campaign during an appearance on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.

Although many dismissed it as a publicity stunt, Hogan declared that his political ambitions were genuine.

He said: "I backed out. I got scared. I thought I might win."
