Wrestling, family and scandal: The MOST SHOCKING revelations from Hulk Hogan's Netflix documentary series

The new Netflix documentary Hulk Hogan: Real American takes a look at the extraordinary life of the WWE legend and the man behind the persona – Terry Bollea.

Featuring Hulk's final interview before his death last year at the age of 71, the four-part series includes some dramatic revelations about the personal struggles, pain and controversies that Hogan experienced both inside and outside the ring.

Hulk's father disapproved of wrestling career

Hulk's dad Pietro 'Peter' Bollea worked in construction and was sceptical about his son's decision to pursue a career in wrestling.

Hogan said: "We were broke and I hated it, especially seeing how my dad slaved in the sun as a construction worker."

The tension led to Hulk being unwelcome at the family home for a period, meaning that he would have to visit his mother Vernice 'Ruth' Bollea when his father was at work.

First WWF Championship

Hulk recalled making both his father and country proud when he beat the Iron Sheik to win his first WWF championship at Madison Square Garden in 1984 amidst the backdrop of the Iran Contra crisis.

Hogan said: "Because of the political landscape, we knew going in (that) this was going to be a big deal. I wasn't into politics in '84, but on the world stage, that was in the news. It was the perfect setup for me to go against the Iron Sheik."

Believed he could be US President

Hulk announced in 1998 that he planned to run for the US presidency at the 2000 election, even promoting his campaign during an appearance on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.

Although many dismissed it as a publicity stunt, Hogan declared that his political ambitions were genuine.

He said: "I backed out. I got scared. I thought I might win."

Fatherhood changed wrestling perspective

Hulk has children Brooke, 37, and Nick, 35, from his marriage to Linda and confessed that he wanted to prioritise parenthood over his wrestling career.

He said of Brooke's birth: "My whole reason for living changed instantly. I had no idea my whole focus would change to protect this little human being."

Hogan explained that his children didn't understand his wrestling fame and said that "trading real life for a wrestling name" and travelling all the time for work took its toll.

Retirement Regret

Hulk revealed that he wished he would've ended his wrestling career after receiving a rapturous reception from the crowd when he took on fellow superstar Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson at WrestleMania X8 in 2002.

Hogan said: "It was one of the most incredible nights I've ever had in my career. Two iconic wrestlers in their generational run... the place was erupting, and I realised they were cheering for me instead of him.

"The Rock got the 1-2-3 and beat me, but I actually won the match because it put me back on the map in a really major way."
