Top Gun: Maverick
Although ‘Top Gun’ was fun and campy, its 2022 legacy sequel certainly outshines it.
Starring Tom Cruise, Miles Teller, Glen Powell and Jon Hamm, the movie tells a deeply human story that honours what came before, while taking the characters and story in a compelling and exciting director.
All that being said, where ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ really shines is in its pulse-pounding action, which is made even more impressive after you learn a lot of the fighter jet sequences were performed for real.
When the idea was pitched to him, Tom insisted he would only come back to star as Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchel if all of the stuntwork was done properly.
He said: “If I’m ever going to entertain this, we’re shooting everything practically.
“I’m in that F/A-18 [jet], period. So we’re going to have to develop camera rigs. There’s going to be wind tunnels and engineering. It’s going to take a long, long time for me to figure it out.”
