E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial
Steven Spielberg clearly dominated the 80s and the director also had the honour of helming the biggest movie of the decade.
On a budget of the relatively-small figure of $10.5 million, 'E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial' opened at number one at the U.S. box office in 1982 and stayed there for six weeks.
After a few re-releases, the picture left cinemas with $792.9 million – which is roughly $2.8 billion when adjusted for inflation.
Reflecting on his work, Spielberg admitted he was proud of 'E.T.' and labelled it a "pretty perfect movie".
He recalled: "Sometimes I see things that I had intended to do that I didn’t do, and sometimes I see things that would have been a better idea than what I’m now seeing all these years later – but for the most part, 'E.T.' is a pretty perfect movie."
