He sold Star Wars to Disney
In 2012, after making the 'Star Wars' prequels, he finally decided to wash his hands of the franchise for good, selling Lucasfilm to Disney for an estimated $4.05 billion dollars.
This gave Disney control of the sci-fi series as well as 'Indiana Jones' and the company's other intellectual properties.
Of the sale, Lucas said: "I could have not sold Lucasfilm and gotten somebody to run the productions, but that isn't retiring. On ‘The Empire Strikes Back’ and ‘Return of the Jedi’ I tried to stay out of the way, but I couldn't. I was there every day.”
