Inspiration
After working on Ridley Scott’s ‘Blade Runner’, Edward Neumeier took concepts from the movie and combined it with ideas from the comic book line of ‘Judge Dredd’ to create the story of ‘RoboCop’.
He recalled: “At about 4 [am] in the morning one night, I was sitting there, and the idea of a robot cop in that environment [‘Blade Runner'] - the location really fired up my imagination.
“When I asked somebody, ‘So what’s this movie about, anyway?’ they pointed to a girl in a tutu, the actress Sean Young, and said, ‘It’s a robot movie, and she’s a robot.’ I was like, ‘That doesn't look like a robot to me.’ Then [they said], ‘Harrison Ford, he’s a robot, too. He’s chasing other robots.’
“That’s all I knew it was about. But the idea I had was: what would a robotic cop think of all these weird people that were extras in Ridley Scott’s movie? I was wondering how A.I. would react to human beings, criminals.”
