Improvised grape-eating

The cafe moment wasn’t the only improvised scene in the film, as its opening was also ad-libbed!

In the scene, a college-aged Harry meets Sally, and as the pair embark on their long road trip, the bachelor begins to loudly eat grapes, annoying his fellow traveller to no end.

The idea for the grape-munching came from Billy after he brainstormed it with Rob.

The director recounted: “I wanted to make him a little bit rougher around the edges to start. So we came up with this idea of him eating the grapes [during the road trip].

“[Billy] said, ‘I can just be spitting the seeds out the window.’ That's what gave Harry a little bit more abruptness. Billy and I just came up with that on set as we were doing it.”
