Cheap as chips
Wanting to help up-and-coming creatives break into Hollywood, Stephen King sold the rights to his book 'Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption' for the relatively low fee of $5,000 to the then-unknown director Frank Darabont.
However, the acclaimed novelist never cashed in the cheque.
Years later, Stephen sent the cheque back to Frank in a frame with the inscription: "In case you ever need bail money. Love, Steve".
