Design difficulties
Much like many other Hollywood projects, 'Predator' went through a number of changes, particularly with regards to the creature itself.
Originally, the killer alien started off as a lanky, bug-eyed insect, but John McTiernan didn't think the design was scary enough, and so halted the entire film's production to get the look of the hunter just right.
Luckily, it didn’t take too long for the director to come up with other ideas, as a conversation with 'Aliens' filmmaker James Cameron - who said he always wanted to see a monster with mandibles – gave McTiernan his eureka moment.
Even so, the new design wasn't perfect, as the costume and prosthetics weighed nearly 200 pounds, which Kevin Peter Hall – the man in the suit – struggled to act in.
Worse still, Kevin couldn’t see out of the costume, and so had to learn the movements of his character and every cast member he shared a scene with.
