Godzilla (1998)
‘Godzilla’, released in 1998, was the first movie in the franchise to be produced by an American company - Sony Pictures - and so obviously received a massive $125 million budget.
In the film, which stars Matthew Broderick, Maria Pitillo and Jean Reno, the enormous reptile goes on a rampage across New York City while American forces try desperately to save the metropolis.
Despite having plenty of money behind it, the movie did not fare well with audiences or critics, and was criticised for being a being an uninspired and lazy remake of the 1954 Japanese classic.
