Godzilla vs. Mothra

Initially conceived of as a standalone movie for Mothra, the giant moth goddess, Toho decided to rewrite the story to cash in on the popularity of the fan-favourite reptile.

In ‘Godzilla and Mothra: The Battle for Earth’, Mothra is sent to defeat Battra, the dark divine moth, who threatens to destroy the world in retaliation against humanity’s mishandling of the planet. The two eventually team up after Godzilla appears, hellbent of bringing Earth to its knees.

The movie became the biggest hit in Japan in 1992, and was rereleased as ‘Godzilla and Mothra” The Battle for Earth’ in the US six years later.
