Her rise to stardom

Bening had roles in shows such as 'Miami Vice' during the 1980s but made a serious acting impact in the 1990 movie 'The Grifters' - which earned her an Oscar nod for Best Supporting Actress.

She has since earned nominations for her performances in 'American Beauty', 'Being Julia' and 'The Kids Are All Right' but is still yet to claim a prize on Hollywood's biggest night.
