Madonna

Michigan native Madonna lived in Britain for several years when she was married to English film director Guy Ritchie.

The Queen of Pop - who split from Guy in 2008 - admitted she often felt out of place as an American woman living in London.

She said: "I never thought in a million years I'd live in London. I quite disliked the place. Then I met my husband. I realised that if I didn't live here I wouldn't get to see him very much.

"We had a long-distance relationship for a year. I thought, somebody has to compromise - which I did. Then I fell in love with London and Guy started taking me to the countryside and I started to feel comfortable here."
