The truth about Joni's adopted daughter was not known until 1993, when an old roommate had sold the story to the media.

By this time, Kelly - who had been renamed Kilauren Gibb - had begun a search for her biological parents and the pair met in 1997. Though the mother and daughter endured what was described as a tricky reunion and subsequent relationship, as recent as 2013, Joni explained they were on good terms.
