A tough childhood

Joni Mitchell was born Roberta Joan Anderson on 7th November, 1943 in the Southern Canadian town of Fort Macleod in Alberta.

Her parents were teacher Myrtle and Royal Canadian Air Force flight lieutenant William who instructed new pilots but after the end of World War II, her father began to work in a grocery store. At the age of nine, she ended up in hospital after contracting polio.
