He got his big break lying to Michael Mac Liammoir to get Othello role in 1962
Gambon - who had joined King Cross’ Unity Theatre when he was 19 - lied about his experience and achievements to land the role of Second Gentleman in a production of Shakespeare's 'Othello' at the prestigious Gate Theatre in Dublin in 1962. The play went on to tour Europe.
Recalling his application, Michael said: "I wrote and said I was passing through Dublin on my way to New York. It was complete lies!”
