Miley Cyrus has added to her menagerie of animals with a new arrival - a tortoise.

The 33-year-old singer took to her Instagram Stories at the weekend to tell fans she had rescued a 20-year-old sulcate tortoise - also known as an African spurred tortoise, called Teru.

The “stars aligned” to allow the rescue mission to take place, after nonprofit dog rescue organization Wags and Walks heard that Miley was keen to add a tortoise to her army of pets.

Sharing a snap of Miley feeding Teru a yellow paper, Wags and Walks wrote alongside it on Instagram: “You truly never know who you'll find in a shelter. When we heard that @mileycyrus was hoping to adopt a tortoise, we knew we had to make the connection happen. After a little coordination, the stars aligned, and Teru officially found his forever home with Miley.”

The adoption happened after Teru spent time in the shelter system.

While his situation was unusual, it’s not unheard of, the rescue organization explained.

They added in the caption: “As unexpected as this rescue was, it's also a reminder of the reality shelters are facing right now.

“Animals of all kinds are ending up in overcrowded systems, and more pets than ever are in need of safe places to go."

Miley also shared the image on her Instagram Stories, alongside the words “Welcome home Teru”.

It’s believed that Miley has 14 living pets, including eight dogs, three cats and two horses.

In an interview with Buzzfeed, Miley previously opened up about how she treats her pets.

Asked what she would say to the animals if they could understand her, Miley replied: “I would hope that all of them know how much that I love them, but I have no doubt in my mind that they do.

“Because I treat them better than my own family members.”

Miley has also used her fame to encourage others to turn to shelters to find their perfect pet, urging fans to “adopt, not shop”.

She adopted for the first time during lockdown as part of the Covid-19 pandemic, and has since turned to local shelters to rescue other animals to add to her growing family.
