The 39-year-old actor - whose role in Sinners earned him the Actor Award for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role during Sunday's (01.03.26) ceremony - paid a heartfelt tribute to his mother during his acceptance speech, and he later opened up more about how much she has helped him achieve things he could never have done without her.
Visibly emotional, he told Extra: "Not even close, you know. Not even a little bit...
"There's been so much in my career my mom wasn't able to be with me in these spaces, you know. So for her to join me on this run it couldn't happen any other way."
During his speech, he thanked his mother for all the effort she put into helping him achieve his dreams.
He said: "Mom, thank you for driving me back and forth to New York when we didn’t have money for the Holland Tunnel, or when we were looking for gas money and parking spaces.”
Michael faced stiff competition for the award, going up against Leonardo DiCaprio, Ethan Hawke, Jesse Plemons and Timothee Chalamet.
He admitted: "I wasn’t expecting this at all. I’m so honoured and privileged to be nominated in this category with people and actors and humans that I love and I love their work and I love what they contribute to our craft.”
He also had kind words for Sinners director Ryan Coogler.
He added: "And I want to thank Ryan Coogler, for giving me the opportunity to show what I can do and be fearless and create a safe space where we could find truth."
The ceremony came days after the BAFTAs ceremony, where Michael was on stage with Sinners co-star Delroy Lindo when Tourette's campaigner John Davidson involuntarily blurted out the N-word.
John, whose life story inspired the critically acclaimed movie I Swear, left the ceremony early and later apologised for what happened admitting he felt "deeply mortified", while the BBC issues an apology for airing the moment and BAFTA bosses confirmed they are launching a "comprehensive review".
