Dove Cameron felt "tortured" when she couldn't make a relationship work.

The 27-year-old actress - who has previously dated the likes of Thomas Doherty and was once engaged to former 'Liv and Maddie' co-star Ryan McCartan - did not name the former flame in question but admitted how much it hurt that they couldn't be together in the end.

She told E! News: "I was in a relationship with someone who loved me to the fullest that they possibly could. But we found that we couldn’t be together, and that’s it’s own form of torture."

By contrast, the former Disney Channel star was in a "loveless" relationship with someone else even though they had made it "very clear" to her that they were interested in being together.

She said: "And then, I was also in sort of a relationship with someone who was making it very clear that they wanted me, but it felt very loveless."

Meanwhile, Dove - who is currently thought to be single but remains guarded about her perosnal life - recently spoke out about her desire to remove the "shame and stigma" associated with mental health, after her own father Philiip Hosterman took his own life in 2011.

She told Byrdie magazine: “I think it’s important just to say this: I’ve had times in my life when I was incredibly suicidal. And I think that needs to be destigmatised.

"My father [died by] suicide. I’ve spoken about that a lot. And I always think about how much shame and stigma there is around suicide.

"And if we could be more open about suicide and mental health, I think there would be so many people [who would say], ‘Hey, I feel like there’s no other option. Can you show me that there are?’ "
