Strictly's Dame Sarah Storey reveals son has been diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes
Strictly Come Dancing star Dame Sarah Storey revealed Charlie's Type 1 diagnosis in a video shared to Instagram on Ocotber 23.
Dame Sarah Storey's son has Type 1 diabetes.
The 49-year-old legendary Paralympic cyclist told fans how doctors diagnosed Charlie, nine, with the chronic autoimmune condition, in which the body cannot make enough insulin, after he was rushed into hospital with high blood sugar.
In a video shared on Instagram on October 23, Sarah discussed life after she and her professional dance partner Julian Caillon, 31, were eliminated from BBC's Strictly Come Dancing on October 18.
The sportswoman continued: "This week has been quite a week, my nine-year-old Charlie got admitted to hospital a few days ago, he had really high blood sugar.
"And just as his sister was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes 12 months ago, Charlie's had the same diagnosis too.
"It can run in families, my husband has got Type 1 diabetes, but, of course, you always hope that it might miss one of them.
"So I am very grateful that I could rush back home to give big cuddles and to help him to navigate life with the multiple injections everyday."
Sarah, who has Louisa, 13, with her 49-year-old husband, fellow Paralympic cyclist Barney Storey, is in awe of how Charlie has embraced living with Type 1 diabetes.
She concluded: "But he’s doing an incredible job.
"He’s already doing the injections himself, working out the dosages and everything, so it’s quite remarkable just how resilient and adaptable he's been."
The former swimmer captioned the post: "Sometimes higher powers are at play….The past week has been quite the rollercoaster….but everything happens for a reason (sic)."
Also on Sunday, Sarah took to her Instagram Stories to share a sweet selfie with Charlie.
She wrote over the shot: "So good to see this little man planning the rest of his half term out as normal again."
Sarah and Julian became the third couple to leave this year's series of Strictly Come Dancing after they faced House of the Dragon actress Bethany Antonia, 28, and her professional dance partner Nancy Xu, 35, in the dreaded dance-off.
Judges Craig Revel Horwood, 61, Motsi Mabuse, 45, and Anton Du Beke, 60, saved Bethany and Nancy as they preferred their Cha-cha-cha to Respect by the late Aretha Franklin over Sarah and Julian's Tango to That Don't Impress Me Much by 61-year-old Shania Twain.
It meant that Shirley Ballas, 66, who had the casting vote in the event of a tie, did not need to give her verdict, but did say that she would have agreed with her fellow judges when asked by 50-year-old host Emma Willis.
