Richard E. Grant is fronting a new travel show inspired by The Odyssey.

Just as Christopher Nolan's epic adaptation of Homer's masterpiece is hitting the big screen, the 69-year-old actor has been announced for a fresh new series coming to Channel 4 which will see him recreating the route of Odysseus' 20-year voyage.

Richard will travel to Malta, Sicily, Italy, Tunisia, Turkey, Corfu and Ithaca as he explores the ancient worlds and modern places which inspired the iconic work.

In Homer's epic, warrior Odysseus battles through deathly perils as he tries to return home after a decade of war.

Nolan's new historical epic features a star-studded cast, including the likes of Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland and Zendaya.

For Very Modern Odyssey, Richard finds himself facing a terrifying volcano, learning archery, and performing in an ancient amphitheatre.

He'll also get to east lotus fruits, marvel at a baroque masterpiece, and even explore a sorceress' cave.

The journey features incredible photography and exchanges with people live in the modern versions of these ancient locations.

Throughout his Odyssey, Richard tries to find the reality within the myth.

More details on the show will be revealed in due course.

Meanwhile, Richard will be seen on the BBC later this year as part of the second series of The Celebrity Traitors alongside the likes of Leigh-Anne Pinnock, Miranda Hart, Rob Beckett and James Blunt.

Appearing on The One Show last month, Richard admitted he wasted no time in getting some tips from longtime friend Celia Imrie, who appeared in the first series of the star-studded spinoff.

He said: “We've known each other for 40 years. I said, 'Celia, what is the thing you can't be prepared for?'

“She said 'The cruelty of people who you instinctively want to trust, in a room like this and suddenly every single person suspects you.' And I think that's a very accurate thing to have said.”

Realising he might have messed up by making a revelation about the show, which only finished shooting recently, he then said: “I’ve already said too much!"

Meanwhile, Richard also admitted that his daughter Olivia didn’t think he’d do too well on the programme when she found out about his casting, saying she thought he wasn’t “going to last more than about four nanoseconds".

He laughed: "She and all her friends to their credit said 'You are incapable of hiding what you feel about anything in life'."
