Kate Garraway admits she’d let daughter join Love Island
The television presenter has revealed she would support her daughter taking part in the hit ITV2 dating show, while also opening up about family life and life after Derek Draper’s death.
Kate Garraway has no objections to her daughter appearing on Love Island.
Despite the ITV2 dating programme’s reputation for romantic drama, intimate challenges and life-changing relationships, the 59-year-old Good Morning Britain presenter made the comments in a new interview while discussing whether her daughter Darcey Draper, 20, would ever consider entering the villa.
Kate, who has been in the spotlight in recent months following her appearance on Celebrity Traitors and reports linking her to broadcaster and economist Liam Halligan, said she would fully support the idea – even if her daughter has no interest in taking part.
Kate told the Daily Mail: “I’d love to do Love Island but I’m not really bikini ready.
“I would let Darcey do Love Island, absolutely, but she says she would never do it!”
Kate shares Darcey and son William Draper with her late husband Derek Draper, who died in January 2024 at the age of 56 following complications linked to his fight with long Covid.
The presenter, best known for fronting Good Morning Britain and whose documentaries chronicling Derek’s illness won widespread praise, also reflected on a recent family moment connected to her appearance on Celebrity Traitors.
Asked about the most difficult aspect of taking part in the BBC reality competition, Kate recalled her daughter’s reaction to an early round table involving fellow contestant Nico Parker.
Kate said: “My daughter had just started uni and the very first roundtable with me and Nico. So one of those people in that stand off was the person that gave birth to her and the other was universally the most popular cast member.
“She was like, ‘Oh my God, mum, what have you done to me, all my friends are saying if Nico goes, I’m going to kill your mum!’”
The comments come as Kate continues to navigate life following Derek’s death.
Last year, she spoke candidly about the emotional experience of taking Darcey to university without her husband by her side.
Recalling the period, Kate said: “I think it was incredibly emotional because first of all we didn’t think she was going to... well, we assumed she was going to fail her A-Levels basically.
“And she didn't do brilliantly, brilliantly, but she did a lot better than anybody including the school thought she would.
“Because, you know, it had all come with Derek passing away and then the fall out and everything, and then lower sixth she'd missed a huge amount of school and stuff.
“Then it sort of all came good so there was a sort of big relief.
“And then heading off to uni and then it was really emotional. I felt very emotional, I didn’t want her to feel it, but I think we both felt that dad wasn’t there.
“It was a very conscious feeling when you're watching the parents all carrying the boxes in. Of course not everyone has got both parents there, but it does feel like it to you.
“We're just struggling with the cases and everything and also thinking he would be so proud.”
