Kate Garraway's new romance is "lovely".

The 59-year-old TV presenter recently started dating Liam Halligan, an economist and journalist who presents The Telegraph's weekly Planet Normal podcast, and she's now opened up about their burgeoning relationship for the first time.

Kate told the Daily Mirror newspaper: "It is lovely. I suppose it is!"

Despite this, the Good Morning Britain star fears "jinxing" the romance and is keen to keep things relatively lowkey for the time being.

She said: "We basically haven’t really had time for a proper date! I don’t want to jinx it! I don’t want to say anything because I will jinx it! I will jinx it. We all love an Irishman, don’t we?"

Kate lost her husband, Derek Draper, in 2024, after a long battle with COVID. However, she now feels comfortable dating again and revealed that Liam is keen to arrange some more formal dates.

She shared: "He says to me, 'Now we're in the papers, is there a chance we can actually have some dates?' But my mum and dad have not been very well so I’ve been really consumed by that.

"It’s been tricky and I’ve just been doing that this weekend. My dad was supposed to be with me actually [at Chelsea Flower Show] but he’s not well enough. I’m very lucky to have both of them and I know it’s normal [part of ageing]."

By contrast, Kate insisted in December that she wasn't ready to date.

During an appearance on the Great Company podcast, Kate shared: "I wouldn't like to think that I'd never had romantic love in my life again.

"I think that would be rather a sad way to go through life wouldn't it? But, no, I'm not there yet."

Asked if she's ever tried using a dating app, Kate replied: "No, course not. I don't think I've ever really dated because everyone keeps asking me about dating and I don't think I've ever dated in that way that you guys do.

"I think it's an uncomfortable thing to do to go and meet someone you've never met. I just end up interviewing them and struggling to get a word in edgeways.

"I'm of the old school where you lived life, did things you loved and then met people along the way. But maybe that doesn't happen anymore."
