Jodie Comer is set to lead a new HBO thriller from Watchmen creator Damon Lindelof.

The Emmy-winning actress, 33, is set to take the central role in The Chain as her Hollywood rise continues following acclaimed performances in Killing Eve, The Bikeriders and zombie sequel 28 Years Later.

Her casting news arrives amid sustained industry attention around Jodie’s transition from British television standout to one of the most sought-after dramatic actors working in film and prestige television.

She has been cast as Rachel in the upcoming HBO limited series, based on Adrian McKinty’s bestselling novel The Chain. HBO confirmed the project has received an eight-episode order under Lindelof’s overall deal with the network.

Rachel is described as “a suburban mom who must consider the unthinkable when her daughter is kidnapped”.

The series was first announced in January and will see Lindelof serve as writer, executive producer and showrunner.

Damon Lindelof said the pilot story had been developed alongside Carly Wray and Breannah Gibson, with Lindelof and Carly writing the script for the opening episode.

The production team will also include Michael Ellenberg and Lindsey Springer for Media Res, alongside Shane Salerno, Breannah and Joe Iberti.

Adrian McKinty, whose novel inspired the adaptation, will serve as co-executive producer.

Jodie remains best known internationally for playing assassin Villanelle opposite Sandra Oh in Killing Eve, the BBC America spy thriller which transformed her into a global television star and earned her an Emmy Award and BAFTA TV Award.

Jodie’s portrayal of the unpredictable killer became one of television’s defining performances of the late 2010s and continues to dominate online fan discussions and streaming rankings years after the series ended.

The Liverpool-born actress first gained recognition in British dramas including My Mad Fat Diary, Doctor Foster and Thirteen before moving into major Hollywood productions.

In recent years, Jodie has starred opposite Matt Damon and Adam Driver in Ridley Scott’s historical drama The Last Duel, alongside Ryan Reynolds in Free Guy and most recently in The Bikeriders with Austin Butler and Tom Hardy.

Attention around Jodie has also intensified ahead of the release of 28 Years Later, Danny Boyle’s long-awaited return to the horror franchise that began with 28 Days Later.

The film, which also stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Ralph Fiennes and Jack O’Connell, became one of the year’s most anticipated cinema releases following the success of its horrific trailers.
