Ludwig has reportedly been renewed for a third series before the second has even aired.

The hit BBC detective series, which stars David Mitchell and Anna Maxwell Martin as puzzle book writer John 'Ludwig' Taylor and his sister-in-law Lucy Betts-Taylor, is returning later this year for a second season.

Now, TVZone has reported that filming for an as yet unannounced third series is set to get underway this Autumn.

The first season following the titular character, whose identical brother James has mysteriously vanished.

John takes on his brother's identity in a bid to undercover the truth about his twin's disappearance.

Although John has live a rather quiet life, he finds himself out of his depth taking on his brother's role as a DCI in charge of a major crimes team.

By the end of season one, he became an official crime consultant after his secret was uncovered and swept under the rug.

However, David recently told RadioTimes.com: "When you watch the second series, you realise there's still quite a lot of obfuscation involved in his role, because not everyone in the police force is entirely on side with his appointment.

"And of course, he's still got to cover up the fact that for a long time he was solving cases while impersonating a police officer.

"And if that ever gets out, well, five murderers will walk free, and he won't walk free himself."

The upcoming season will allow David's character to be "more Ludwig than ever", which has been teased as "brilliant at solving puzzles but hopeless at everything else".

The synopsis continues: "But John’s identical twin brother, James, is still missing, and now that he’s an official employee of the station, John is forbidden from using any police resources to look for his brother or uncover exactly what he was investigating.

"Of course, John won’t stop and neither will Lucy (Anna Maxwell Martin), John’s sister-in-law and wife of his missing brother James – a puzzle needs solving and a husband and father needs bringing home. One masquerade may have ended, but a new one has just begun."
