Ludwig has been confirmed for a third series - before season two has even aired.

The David Mitchell-led show has been greenlit for a third instalment by the BBC, ahead of the second series airing later this summer.

David said: "I am delighted that Ludwig will be returning to solve more of Mark Brotherhood’s brilliant mysteries.

"I can’t wait to get started and have renewed the subscription on my denouement-learning app."

The detective series sees David portray puzzle maker John "Ludwig" Taylor and his identical twin brother, detective chief inspector James Taylor.

David stars opposite Anna Maxwell Martin, who portrays James' wife Lucy Betts-Taylor, and Dylan Hughes appears as Ludwig's nephew Henry Betts-Taylor.

Kenton Allen, Executive Producer and CEO Big Talk Studios, said: "Ludwig has become one of those rare shows that genuinely cuts through - critically, commercially and internationally.

"We’re hugely grateful to the BBC, ZDF and ITV Studios for the confidence they’ve shown in greenlighting a third season ahead of the launch of series two.

"What Mark Brotherhood has created is brilliantly original, hugely entertaining and deceptively distinctive in the way it blends smart comedy with a richly satisfying detective engine.

"At the heart of that success is the remarkable partnership between David Mitchell and Anna Maxwell Martin, brought to life by an exceptional creative team. In a crowded global market, for audiences to have embraced Ludwig on this scale feels incredibly special. There’s clearly nothing puzzling about that."

The upcoming season will allow David's character to be "more Ludwig than ever", which has been teased as "brilliant at solving puzzles but hopeless at everything else".

David recently told RadioTimes.com: "When you watch the second series, you realise there's still quite a lot of obfuscation involved in his role, because not everyone in the police force is entirely on side with his appointment.

"And of course, he's still got to cover up the fact that for a long time he was solving cases while impersonating a police officer.

"And if that ever gets out, well, five murderers will walk free, and he won't walk free himself."

Ludwig's first series was the biggest launch for a comedy on the BBC since at least 2018, after attracting 9.5 million viewers (28-day figure).
